TOUCHIN' BASE #2

With Craig Goldy And Rudy Sarzo

Jeff: You know the Word of God says...first of all I want to say welcome to my friend Goldy, and welcome to Rudy Sarzo. I love you guys. God bless you. All of us have done things together; and we're tryin' to get you're attention. And Rudy Sarzo has been with Quiet Riot. Didn't you get your name from saying quite right?

Rudy: Yeah.

Jeff: And then you went to with Randy, and joined Ozzie Ozbourne.

Rudy: Yeah, he joined first and then I followed.

Jeff: And then you did tourin'; and then you did White Snake.

Rudy: Yeah, then back to Quiet Riot.

Jeff: Back to Riot. And then you did White Snake. We did a jam. And then I went off; and said, 'I'm goin' serve the Lord, or whatever.' And you guys....went to Dio rock group. You went to White Snake and won a grammy album.

Rudy: No, I went to a grammy party once.

Jeff: You went to a grammy party? :)

Rudy: That's about it.

Jeff: I thought White Snake won a grammy album.

Rudy: No.

Goldy: He would know. No, you did! You won a grammy.

Rudy: We were robbed.

Jeff: You were robbed, you were robbed! :) [Laughing]

Rudy: No, see, in the olden days they didn't have a heavy metal category. It was like, uh, Johnny Matthis, White Snake, and ...

Jeff: Everybody altogether...

Rudy: The first time they had a heavy metal category they had Metallica and ...

Jeff: I know. That's weird. What can I tell you. And of course, now, we're in a place were there is no competition. Thank God. You know what though, The Word of God says, here in Luke 6:22,23, Blessed are you when men shall hate you; and when they shall separate from you. Boy, that sounds like most rock groups to me. When they shall separate from you; and separate you from their company. And shall reproach you, and cast out your name in evil. But, now here's the catch, For the Son of Man's sake. A lot of guys that are into rock, especially a while back, we're not excited by heavy metal tours, and things, and various cities. But its one thing to get called names for doin' something like trying to make money, or doin' music, or rock, or whatever. Or guys that get busted, or get hurt, or get put in prison. Or girls that are doin' things; they're gettin' in trouble. But it says here, Blessed are you when you get called names for the Son of Man's sake. When you say, 'Well, I'm a Christian. I love the Lord.' Rejoice ye, in that day; and leap for joy; for behold your reward is great in heaven. For in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. Luke 6:22,23 says that, People that have loved God throughout the ages, there's always been somebody to call you names. If you're gonna do something good, people are always goin' to call you names. You have great albums, great albums credits you do. You know I've done a couple albums. We've had things that have done well; and they're people who didn't like what we did. But they're were a lot of people that did. Same thing in servin' the Lord. There's a lot of people that love God; but, then there's gonna be other people, that the minute you step up, they're goin' to say, 'Oh well, you know, what is this catch, what's this, what's that.' There really is no catch. There really is no reason for us to be here today; except, that we love God. And we're clear-minded, we're not on drugs. Which that dispels the theory that all musicians have to be drugged out crazy. Crazy, yes crazy. :) [Rudy chuckles] And it says here that in Romans 10:9-11, If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. That means that in your heart you know that there's a God; in your heart you know God loves you; in your heart you know Jesus raised from the dead. And it says, And with your mouth confess Jesus is Lord. Say, Jesus is my Lord, He's my Savior. It's as simple as that. For the scripture says, Whosoever believeth on Him, shall not be ashamed. II Corinthians 5:17 says, Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. I feel like maybe there's a musician right now; that there is somebody that is kinda, like heavy; or somebody that's of ...maybe your making fun right now saying something. But I'm goin' to tell you somethin'. To people that might be around, that's making fun. or cutting up right now. Where's that person goin'? Where are you goin'? What are you dealin' with in your life, ya know? The bottom line here is that, the Lord has come to set you free; and he who the Son set free is free indeed.

There are people who make fun, you know, of things. And I had a guy one time who made fun of me. And he was in a very bad situation. And I didn't gloat over him, but I just told him, you know, he was making fun of me, and we were in prison, maximum security prision. Actually, it was Charles Manson. And I was in the cell with Charles Manson. I don't know if you know that I went and saw him? But I sat there in the cell, and Manson started making fun of me. He said, 'I'm cool all by myself. You think you've got some kind of power in Jesus?' I said, 'I got all the power I want.' I looked at Manson; and I looked around in this maximum security cell. And I go, 'Whew, you got alot power dude. Wow, it's done a lot for you. I mean, it's really great. Life with no parole. Whoa. That's some heavy, heavy kharma. Whoa.'

But, the Word of God says, Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. Old things are passed away. Behold, all things are become new. And I'd like to point out that, I didn't leave that prison cell without talking to Charles Manson; and offering him an opportunity to pray. I mean, I went in there to pray with him. He didn't want to know about it; he made fun of me, and everything. But people always make fun. I'm sure doing the rock'n'roll thing, you've been called some names.

Rudy: Yeah. There's a lot of Christians in rock'n'roll; but, it's the kind of situtation that unless you're a fan...That opens up opportunity you have. If the opportunity arises, that's when you can open up; and say how you feel. And I think that's one of the things I enjoy about choice, having an opportunity like that.

Jeff: To share, right, right. You've read the Bible for quite some time. Especially, gettin' in the Bible everyday. That's neat, though, that really is.

Rudy: Well, it's the least I can do for all the things God has given me.

Jeff: He does some neat things.

Rudy: Unbelieveable things. Every single day. And I can't wait for it, the rest.

Jeff: I heard that. [Rudy laughs] Yeah. And you, Goldy, you gave your heart when you were back in the...

Goldy: Seventh grade....

Jeff: Seventh grade. And then you kinda, like, veered off for a while.

Rudy: I've experienced some of those times with you.

Goldy: I got caught into what alot of people get caught into. They view Christianity as having to become like all the other Christians they see. And they feel like they're afraid to be transformed into a traditional Christian. And, I'm not coming against traditional Christians.

Jeff: [Kind of forceful] But, what is a traditional Christian? But, I know, I know what you're saying; and it's cool. But I'm saying, for people that are watchin', you know, what is a traditional Christian? Three quarters of the New Testament was written in prison. Three quarters of the New Testament was written in prison. Is that a traditional Christian? Most guys. when they got busted, and put in prison for somethin'; even if they were preachin' the Word, just the scandal of it would immediately exclude them from most of the top churches in America.

Goldy: And being a Christian, I got caught up into thinking that, I had to be a certain way. And it didn't seem cool, or it didn't seem like it was going to satisfy the things I wanted out of my life. And didn't seem it was going to come and satisfy; or as cool as I wanted, so I kinda stayed away from it, instead of really looking to God. And saying, 'What do you have for me?' Because I didn't realize that, what God had for me was better than what I had for myself.

Jeff: Right.

Goldy: And so, there was a way it always works...what He's got.

Rudy: ...Personal journey.. I was brought up Catholic. And I when I was 10 years old, you know being a child, I myself I can't talk for everybody, but it was more like you were scared. Well, you know, like large statues, and... I'll tell you, when you're very young, you're scared. You go to your grandfather's, and there are these huge statues, life size, I mean these big... [Jeff laughs] like it was you do this, you do that, you're going to hell...

Goldy: And you're like. 'Oh, my God.'

Rudy: This is really scarry. And when I was sort of going through my teenage years, I sort of like, okay, I've tried this. And it's really scarry. So, I started going to the most direct way to reach God. And, it wasn't until I started reading the Bible, I found out that my direct like to God was through Christ.

Jeff: Amen. [Men laugh] You know, when I'm out on the road, you see so many people. And one of the things that I'm really excited about; people that are really servin' God; and that doesn't mean that they're not a little wild or crazy. Like, young people are goin' to be kids; high school kids, and whatever. But really they are servin' the Lord. We've done a few concerts. And now we're doing an album. And we're really grateful that your goin' to play bass.

Rudy: That's great.

Jeff: And we're kicking things around. But we've seen some big crowds out there. In New York there were, like for two days, 46,000 kids. But in any event, there were alot of people. And they were all saying that Jesus was Lord. And then like last week, I was down in Texas. And the youth prison down there let the youth prison come in to a church. I was in a church, but it wasn't the way one envisions a church like the quintessential building. It was like a big warehouse, holds like 4,000 people. It looked more like you could be playin' rock there, with a big stage. It's a great place, but it's nice place. But it's not, kids aren't gonna walk in there; and go, 'Wow.' And so, the youth facility they let the young guys come out from the youth prison. And the girls. And it was awesome. It was awesome. We had a gang banger tryin' to kill himself; wanted to kill himself. And when I asked if I could pray for young people that really were contemplating suicide, I said, 'If you are hearing a voice that's telling you to commit suicide in your heart, or whatever; and you are seriously contemplating suicide. I want you to come; and we're going to pray for you.' We had a guy, who was real clean, he looked like a college kind of kid, kind of nice looking guy, tall, came and got prayer. There were girls that came and got prayer. There were some good background Christians, that raised up. And then some of these gang bangers were comin' up. This one gang banger had cut his hand, his arm; there were big slashes on his arm. And he's a little guy, talked broken English; and his name was Joe. And the minute I looked at Joe.... He had his head shaved; he had a pony tail down the back. It was Joe. The minute I saw him it was, like, I had a love in my heart for him. It was unbelievable. And I felt really....If you think in terms of fleshly terms, you could think I would go to war for him. 'Cause what I saw was somethin' deep, somethin' where he's been searching so hard. And he raised his hand, to give his heart to Jesus at the altar call. And another gang banger made fun of him from the youth group. And he jumped him; and they had a big fight that broke out, a big fight during the altar call. And we got them pulled apart, I prayed...it was the grandma that led him to Jesus. I could not get him after that. I couldn't settle the guys down. Because they were all lookin' at each other; goin', 'I'm trying to punk him.' I kept goin', 'Settle down, settle down.' And he's still lookin' at the other guy, goin', 'You think it's funny? You think something's funny? And he's gettin' real heavy. All this heaviness is goin' on. And I had this grandma come up, that speaks Spanish. And she starts cryin', and sobbin'; and she got down, and she hugged this kid. And he got down on his knees. And she put her arms around him; and she was sobbin'. It took 30 minutes, approximately. I would say 30 minutes. And that kid finally broke; and he cried; and he gave it up. And he said, 'I'm going to go with the Lord.' And then he prayed. What really hit me, Ruddy, was when we were prayin' about suicide for these kids; he said, 'I want to die.' And he's 17 years old. 'I want to die.' I said, 'Why do you want to die?' And he said, 'I want to be with my brother.' He was shot and killed six months ago. And he said, 'I was shot twice; and I want to be with my brother.' And I thought, you know, You can't play music in a time like that to help this kid. In a situation like that, you can't just play music. I mean, you can sing; but, you can't just do this or do that. You gotta pray for them. And we prayed; and I believe this kid's life is changed. I know it is, I mean we've been following up.

But, it's awesome, the things that are happenin'. I mean, you guys..after we kinda split up from the band, you guys kinda went out and did the monsters of rock things...Did you ever do the Monster Of Rock thing?

Rudy: Well, we did it with White Snake.

Jeff: Because you guys were drawing some big crowds. One time you were in Arco Arena in North California somewhere...

Rudy: Name me a town.

Jeff: I don't know. Sacramento?

Rudy: Okay.

Jeff: Been there, done that. And, I remember I was goin' to do a little revival. And you guys were playing at Arco Arena. And I went in, and I had like 30 kids. And I thought, 'Whoa ....'

Rudy: You, especially, when I was with White Snake, there were certain songs like, Here I go Again....That was so satisfying to go backstage to do a meet, and greet after the show; and hear the band go, you know, that song really came at an important time in my life..... Yeah, that's cool....[Jeff starts humming the song]

Jeff: You know what? We're, believe it or not, we're down to three minutes.

Rudy: Whoa.

Jeff: Isn't it wild, how fast it can go? And uh, you've got an awesome family; you've got a beautiful wife. Things are goin' good with your parents...[Rudy agreeing] We'll have to hook back up. This is wild, when you and I hooked up here, I was really excited. And I was tellin' you when you walked in, and we got together, I was telling Goldy, 'I didn't realize how much I missed Rudy until I saw him again.' But uh, good stuff, good stuff happens. But you know what, the answer for the kids out there; the answer for kids that are watching; those who are watching; those who want sucess in your life; you want to overcome; the answer is Jesus Christ. You know, I don't care if you're a rock musician; I don't care if you're a famous rock musician; or if you've sold 50 bug-zillion albums; or if you're playin' in your room the guitar; or whatever...your talent comes from the Lord. Your life belongs to Jesus, and you need to just give it back. The Word of God says, When you give it up, you will receive.

Rudy: That's right.

Jeff: It says, That you're strength, God's strength, is make perfect in weakness. I'm very strong. I feel very strong, very, very strong. I feel strong in my mind, and my heart. Everything. At the same time, I recognize that, basically, I'm weak. My strength comes from the Lord Jesus Christ. The Word of God says, All who call on the name of the Lord will be saved. I want you to pray this prayer. Say, 'Lord Jesus, I give you my life; I give you my heart; I receive you as my Savior; and I just give it all up to you. Everything that I am. And, I know, Lord Jesus, You're gonna bless me; and You're gonna keep me safe. In Jesus name, Amen.' You can call in on television, the number on the screen 714-731-1000. You guys, that are in the rock industry; you guys that are in the heavy rock industry; we know you're out there; we know you love God. We know most of you guys down deep in your heart, love the Lord Jesus. And it's time to step up, and be counted. Any parting shots? Go with God.

My Deepest Love,
Jeff
