LUSTS OF THE WORLD
I John 2:16 - For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of Father, but is of the world.

  1. Lust of the flesh - root of bitterness - resist God's grace - need to feel esteemed, iimportant, want own place in life - the corruption of the Paul design.

    1. Satan's temptation - self esteem - If you are? - Luke 4:9-11.

    2. Jesus' answer - Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Luke 4:12

    3. Traits:

      1. Surface attitudes:

        1. Rebellion to authority.

        2. Distrust of people.

      2. Root causes in the soul:

        1. Anger, violence, hatred.

        2. Manifested as 'rights' - violated rights.

  2. Lust of the eyes - moral impurity - satisfy hungers - instant gratification, wants needs met quickly, accummilation of things to feel valued - needs center stage - take the place of God in people's lives - the corruption of the John design.

    1. Satan's temptation - satisfy hunger - Luke 4:3.

    2. Jesus' answer - Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. Luke 4:4

    3. Traits:

      1. Surface attitudes:

        1. Frustration.

        2. Nervousness, worry, faithlessness.

      2. Root causes in the soul:

        1. Lusts - hungers, cravings, greedy.

        2. Manifested in nagging, pushing, self-centeredness.

  3. Pride of life - serve mammon (world systems) versus serve God - need to feel as good as others, need to be necessary, worthy - the corruption of the Peter design.

    1. Satan's temptation - power, glory, worship - Luke 4:5,6,7.

    2. Jesus' answer - Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve. Luke 4:8

    3. Traits:

      1. Surface attitudes:

        1. Insecurity.

        2. Hopelessness.

      2. Root causes in the soul:

        • Fear.
